Because of Superman's reputation for being a big blue boy scout, audiences were pretty shocked when he killed General Zod by snapping his neck at the end of The Man of Steel. To be fair, this shouldn't have been as shocking as it was. Do you remember how Superman already killed Zod the last time they met on film? He killed him in the comics too. In fact, this isn't even the first time Superman has killed. This plot point might even serve as an emotional explanation as to why Superman doesn't kill, much like Batman's emotional reasons for his "one rule". The audience's reaction was probably more shocking than the scene itself. But you can't deny that the brutal ending to 'Man of Steel' was deeply disturbing.
Do you know why Superman makes a point never to kill his foes? Because he can so easily do it. That’s part of what made director Zach Snyder's climax so shocking. In a split-second emotional decision, Superman suddenly rebels against 75 years of pre-established character history. It was like watching 'The Dark Knight' end with Batman letting the Joker fall to his death instead of saving him. However, it's not anywhere close to the next shocker on our list.
