You could say this was the best bait-and-switch movie reveal of the year. You could also say it's a slap in the face to comic book fans, or to anybody who likes a film trailer to accurately represent the movie it's advertising. “Iron Man 3” commercials and the first half of the movie set up Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin. Fans were excited to see Kingsley as this imposing bad guy who strips Stark of everything because The Mandarin is a beloved comic book villain. Imagine the dissapointment when the character turned out to be anything but a terrorist mastermind. The Mandarin was wasted on comic relief and toilet humour.
The Mandarin turned out to be a struggling English actor with substance abuse issues named Trevor Slattery. He was employed by the real Mandarin, Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) to disguise himself and basically create a scapegoat for his mission. You might hate the irreverant treatment of the character's origin and the waste of potential shown in Ben Kingsley's chilling performance. You might love the scientific twist and cool special effects given to an otherwise mythical character who may have been hard to believe in Marvel's cinematic universe. Either way, you were shocked.
