NEW Upcoming 'How I Met Your FATHER' Spin-Off Series:
5 Things You Need to Know!
3 of 5 Some Big Challenges To Overcome
The only problem with this plan is that it poses a serious danger of confusing what sounds like a cute idea with the true makings of an enduring, marathon series.
We all love the story and we're dying to meet the Mother's group of friends. We also can't wait to see how their stories intertwine, but do you really think those kids want to hear their mother's side of the story after 9 years of hearing their dad's quest for love? Probably not. Just like them, long time viewers may already be desperate to get back to their own lives. This presents a clear challenge for the writers to see whether they can keep a 9 year story fresh, funny and entertaining to viewers that have already been hearing one side of this story for almost a decade.
Unfortunately, this is only the tip of the iceberg...
4 Of 5 The Negatives
Let's fast forward to next year, when season 2 is about to start. The show's concept will no longer be just a cute new idea. Our twenty-something characters will now be played by people living a decade later in time. How I Met Your Mother was interesting because it took place in our time as it was being told from a character living in the future. Now that so much time has passed, retelling the story will require going back almost a decade from today, yet the story will still come from a character in the future. This effectively takes away half of the familiarity feeling, while the other half is being replaced with new characters. Unfortunately, nobody will notice until the initial feeling of novelty wears off.
How I Met Your Mother was a new gimmick in itself when it started, but it didn't work for so many years just because it's novelty. The show only lasted because of the chemistry between Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders,Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel. For the new spinoff to succeed, it will need just the right mix of chemistry in just the right way with an entirely new group. So what should they do?
