5 Shocking Facts That Almost Ruined Wolverine Forever
(5 of 5) Marvel Planned To Dump Wolverine
The fan-favorite immortal mutant didn't even debut in the pages of the X-Men comics. His first appearance was in an issue of 'The Incredible Hulk' and he was supposed to just be a one-off Canadian agent to face off against the Hulk, and he almost stayed that way. Wolverine was recruited into the X-Men in 1975's 'Giant Sized X-Men' #1 and he officially became part of the team in 'X-Men' #94, although he still played supporting second to the rest of the cast. Without the complicated backstory that has come to define him, Marvel felt that he wasn't as exciting as the rest of the established superheroes. So the creative team planned to remove him from the roster until artist John Byrne intervened. As a Canadian, Byrne didn't want to lose one of Marvel's only Canadian characters. He single-handedly saved the character and helped Wolverine become the Lil Wayne of the comic book world (you know, since he's in almost everything).
